Harmful Algae Found in Lake DeSoto

Submitted by on

caution tapeHot Springs Village would like to caution the residents that Lake DeSoto is currently experiencing a harmful algal bloom (HAB) that was confirmed through testing by the Arkansas Department of Energy and Environment’s (ADEE) Division of Environmental Quality (DEQ). They found that there is a presence of microcystin, which is a toxin that is often present in HAB situations. This toxin can be harmful to people and pets who are exposed to it.

What you can do:

  • Avoid all areas where the algae is visible. It can be mainly gathered in coves, so avoid the water in these areas.
  • Pets and children should be particularly cautious because they may not be fully aware of the toxicity.
  • Do not fish, swim, paddleboard/kayak, or expose yourself to any areas where the algae is present.

What to do if exposed:

  • Rinse any exposed area with water immediately
  • Wash any materials that come in contact with the algae
  • Pets should be washed immediately

Exposure can cause symptoms from skin irritation, headache, shortness of breath, nausea, and vomiting to even more serious liver damage and nervous system issues. Seek medical attention if you experience any symptoms.

Conditions will be monitored along with the ADEE-DEQ. They have advised halting any treatments for the algae and allowing the natural ecosystem to do its job. The advisory will continue until the bloom is no longer present in the lake. When advised by the ADEE-DEQ to lift the advisory, use of the lake will resume as usual. Updates will occur when changes are made to the advisory. Any questions can be directed to the POA offices. Please keep vigilant by abiding by the advisory until it is safe.
